This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to the Energy use in Environment.

average
adjective
Constituting the result obtained by adding together several amounts and then dividing this total by the number of amounts.
Example: This chart shows the energy consumption of an average Australian household and how proportion of emitting greenhouse gas in each type of active.
consumption
noun
The action of using up a resource.
Example: This chart shows the energy consumption of an average Australian household and how proportion of emitting greenhouse gas in each type of active.
cooling
noun
Cooling is removal of heat, usually resulting in a lower temperature and/or phase change.
Example: The last two parts of things are water heating which is second large source of using energy and the smallest consuming energy one = cooling.
emission
noun
An emission is something that's been released or emitted into the world.
Example: The second chart shows the percentage of greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
energy
noun
Energy, in physics, the capacity for doing work. It may exist in potential, kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear, or other various forms.

greenhouse gas
noun phrase
A gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation. Carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons are examples of greenhouse gases.

marginally
adverb
To only a limited extent; slightly.
Example: There are just a marginally change in greenhouse gas emissions which grow from 30% to 32% and rise from 2% to 3%.
proportion

Harmonious relation of parts to each other or to the whole : balance, symmetry.
Example: This chart shows the energy consumption of an average Australian household and how proportion of emitting greenhouse gas in each type of active.
refrigeration

The process of subjecting food or drink to cold in order to chill or preserve it.
Example: Using energy of lighting and refrigeration are similar change in greenhouse gas emissions.
